Barbecue Pizza Subs
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp canola oil
- 3/4 lb (0.375 kg) lean ground beef
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 1 can (7 1/2 oz/213 mL) pizza sauce
- 1/2 tsp dried basil, crumbled
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano, crumbled
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/8 tsp freshly ground pepper
- 4 torpedo rolls
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
Directions
- Place a 10 inch cast iron frypan on natural gas barbecue grid. Heat frypan over medium heat for 10 minutes.
- Heat 1 tbsp oil in frypan on barbecue grid. Add beef and onion. Cook, stirring to break up beef, until browned, about 7 - 10 minutes. Drain off excess fat.
- Stir in pizza sauce, basil, oregano, salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes.
- Meanwhile, slice top 1/2 inch from each roll. Set tops aside. Hollow out rolls to within 1/2 inch of bottom and sides. Discard bread centres or reserve for another use.
- Sprinkle 3 tbsp of cheese into each roll. Spoon meat mixture into rolls, dividing equally. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Replace tops of rolls. Wrap rolls individually in foil.
- Heat rolls over low heat directly on barbecue grid until cheese is melted and rolls are heated through, about 20 minutes.
