Skip the regular grilled ham and cheese sandwich and try a Monte Cristo. In addition to deli ham, we added slices of turkey meat and Swiss cheese to our version of this classic egg dipped and fried sandwich.

Monte Cristo Sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (2%)
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp freshly ground pepper
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 8 slices whole grain bread
  • 4 thin slices deli ham
  • 4 thin slices deli turkey breast
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 tbsp canola oil

Directions

  1. Whisk eggs in a large shallow bowl or pie plate. Whisk in milk, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper until blended; set aside.
  2. Spread mustard on one side of 4 bread slices. Top with ham, turkey and cheese, dividing equally. Cover with remaining bread slices.
  3. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large nonstick frypan over medium heat.
  4. Working with one sandwich at a time, dip sandwiches into egg mixture, turning to coat both sides. Cook sandwiches in batches, adding remaining oil as necessary, until golden brown and cheese is melted, about 2 – 3 minutes per side.
